Phil Smythe's 1972 Firebird Formula

Phil Smythe is one of PSP's Restoration Forum's most active participants. This 1972 Firebird Formula is one of three (3) Pontiacs he currently owns (2007).

Phil bought the car while in High School and drove it to class every day. It had some rust problems in the unibody sections and at one point he did a frame off job, replacing quite a bit of the car with parts from a 76 Formula. It was originally a 350 Pontiac car, and that poor modified, overcammed 350 Pontiac endured his abusive 6500 rpm upshifts, for about 6 years! Then came a string of 400's, one built wrong and the others he abused and injured. The current 400 is now over 20 years old and has held together very well. This Formula is strictly a street car with occasional runs at the strip for fun. It runs on pump gas, starts-up easily and gets "partially reasonable mileage" according to Phil.

Future plans include Kauffman aluminum heads for more compression and weight loss, a cam change and possibly a 455. But a better fuel system is first, then new carpet and stereo system!
